Bibit Samad leads soccer transition team

T

he transition team established by the Youth and Sports Ministry selected former deputy Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) chief Bibit Samad Rianto as its chairman during its inaugural meeting on Wednesday evening.

'€œThe team'€™s inaugural meeting has chosen Bibit [Samad Rianto] as its chairman and Lodewijk Paulus as deputy chairman,'€ said the ministry as quoted by kompas.com in a statement on Thursday.

Youth and Sports Minister Imam Nahrawi did not attend the meeting as he was accompanying Indonesia'€™s badminton team participating in the Sudirman Cup badminton competition in China. Two of the team'€™s members, namely FX Hadi Rudyatmo and Iwan Rukminto, were also absent.

As his first task, Bibit has been assigned to lead the transition team in communicating with world soccer body FIFA next week. FIFA has called on the Youth and Sports Ministry and the Soccer Association of Indonesia (PSSI) to resolve their disputes by May 29 at the latest. Otherwise, Indonesia will face FIFA sanctions.

The team, which was formed to take over the role of the suspended PSSI, currently has 13 members after four members, namely Darmin Nasution, Farid Husain, Ridwan Kamil and Velix Wanggai, resigned. (fsu/ebf) (++++)
