oreign Ministry protection of Indonesian citizens director Lalu Muhammad Iqbal stated on Saturday that the 16 Indonesian migrant workers held at the Dialong Company Ltd. gambling firm in Cambodia would serve as witnesses in a theft case involving their recruiter.
The workers' recruiter, JS, from Selat Panjang, Riau, went missing after allegedly making off with Rp 2.1 billion (US$160,710) from the firm, leading the firm to detain the 16 migrant workers.
Iqbal said the legal mechanism against JS was expected to start on Monday and the Indonesian Embassy in Phnom Penh would look for a lawyer to represent the Indonesians.
'The firm held the 16 Indonesians to obtain information [about the theft] in anticipation of the theft being followed by a legal case," Iqbal said in Jakarta as quoted by kompas.com, adding that they were not victims of kidnapping or human trafficking.
According to Iqbal, the Indonesian Embassy had also arranged for the Indonesians to stay in the Grand Dragon Hotel in Cambodia. (fsu)(++++)
