The habitat of Mahakam porpoises in Kedang Kepala River, the fork of the Mahakam River in Muara Siran, Muara Kaman district, Kutai Kartanegara regency, East Kalimantan,is being threatened by the dense traffic of barges transporting coal.
'I'm really apprehensive about with the conditions because Kedang Kepala River is now one of main habitats of porpoises in Mahakam,' said Daniella Kreb, the advisor of Rare Aquatic Species of Indonesia (RASI), a conservation foundation, in Balikpapan on Wednesday.
Kreb said porpoises were at risk of extinction. Apart from the Mahakam River, porpoises can be found in the Irawadi and Mekong rivers in Myanmar.
'For the last two years it has been hard to find porpoises in the Kedang Kepala River. You used to be to see them a lot in the morning and afternoon,' said Muara Siran village head Uhay. (++++)
