ice President Jusuf Kalla has said the Indonesian government guarantees upholding humanity principles in dealing with Bangladeshi and Rohingya refugees in the country.
'We will fulfill our humanity-related responsibilities,' he said as quoted by Antara.
He was speaking after attending a meeting with Aceh Governor Zaini Abdullah, who reported the latest condition of Bangladeshi migrants and Rohingya refugees from Myanmar in Aceh at the Vice Presidential Office in Jakarta on Wednesday.
Kalla said the government had agreed to accommodate the refugees, but there should be international cooperation in dealing with the issue.
The Vice President said the Bangladeshi refugees, all adult men, merely sought to escape economic hardship and not humanitarian conflict, and would therefore be returned to their home country.
In contrast, he said, Indonesia as a great nation must not reject refugees fleeing a humanitarian crisis. This was especially because Indonesia adopted national ideology Pancasila, with two of the five tenets being social justice and humanity, he added.
Kalla said the government would consider and assess the possibility of accommodating Rohingya refugees in Indonesia in at a designated area if their numbers continued to increase. (ebf)(+++)
