overnor Basuki 'Ahok' Tjahaja Purnama claims that officials have yet to understand the meaning of the spirit of National Awakening Day and have not fully committed themselves to the nation.
'[Officials] memorize the National Awakening song, but do not live up to it. Many officials are corrupt,' Ahok said after a National Awakening Day ceremony at the National Monument (Monas) in Central Jakarta on Wednesday.
He was referring to the song 'Bagimu Negeri' (To You, My Country), which is sung to commemorate National Awakening Day every May 20.
In the song, Ahok said, one dedicated and promised to fully serve the country with body and soul.
'You don't need to dedicate your body and soul [as literally written in the song]; just don't be corrupt, serve residents well and work during work hours. Officials get paid a lot but most still work poorly,' he said.
