Jokowi'€™s all-female KPK committee a '€˜sensationalist'€™ move

S

etara Institute chairman Hendardi has branded President Joko '€œJokowi'€ Widodo'€™s selection of all female members for a committee to select the next leaders of the Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) as a '€œsensationalist'€ move, while adding that all the committee were credible.

'€œIt'€™s interesting and sensationalist as President Jokowi has selected all women, but those who have been selected are trusted and have credibility,'€ said Hendardi as quoted by Antara news agency in Jakarta on Thursday.

He said it was no problem if the KPK leadership selection committee chairman and members were all women. In politics, he said, sensationalism was sometimes needed.

'€œIt would have been no different had the committee members been all male. It'€™s no problem if they are all women, but the sensationalist value of the move will be more interesting for the public,'€ said Hendardi.

Hendardi said that with an all-female KPK leadership selection committee, President Jokowi wanted to show his stance on gender equality and that Indonesian women should be involved in high-level decision-making processes.

'€œIndonesian politics has always been dominated by men,'€ he said.

President Jokowi announced the KPK leadership selection committee members on Thursday. They are Destry Damayanti (economist, monetary expert) as chairman and member, Enny Nurbaningsih (constitutional law expert) as deputy chairman and member, and Harkristuti Harkrisnowo (criminal law and human rights expert) as a member.

Other members are Betty Alisjahbana (management and information technology expert), Yenti Garnasih (economic criminal expert), Supra Wimbarti (psychologist), Natalia Subagio (governance and bureaucracy expert), Diani Sadiawati (legal expert) and Meuthia Ganie Sadiawati (sociologist).

'€œI hope the selection committee can work and decide the KPK commissioners,'€ said Jokowi at Halim Perdanakusuma Airport in Jakarta on Thursday. (ebf)(+++)
