Military urged to abandon virginity tests

T

he Working Group against Torture (WGAT) has called on the Indonesian Military (TNI) to stop conducting virginity tests on prospective female cadets because such a practice was a setback in human rights protection in the country.

'€œBased on several experiences, the virginity test causes ailment, shame and trauma to prospective cadets, since it concerns their privacy,'€ WGAT activist Erasmus Napitupulu said in a press release here on Friday.

He argued that virginity had nothing to do with a woman soldier'€™s performance in defense and security activities.

The test is contradictory to the state'€™s commitment to and ratification of the UN Convention against Torture and Other Cruel, Inhuman or Degrading Treatment or Punishment through Law No 5/1998.

'€œWe urge the government to phase out virginity tests,'€ he said. (rms)(++++)
