he Working Group against Torture (WGAT) has called on the Indonesian Military (TNI) to stop conducting virginity tests on prospective female cadets because such a practice was a setback in human rights protection in the country.
'Based on several experiences, the virginity test causes ailment, shame and trauma to prospective cadets, since it concerns their privacy,' WGAT activist Erasmus Napitupulu said in a press release here on Friday.
He argued that virginity had nothing to do with a woman soldier's performance in defense and security activities.
The test is contradictory to the state's commitment to and ratification of the UN Convention against Torture and Other Cruel, Inhuman or Degrading Treatment or Punishment through Law No 5/1998.
'We urge the government to phase out virginity tests,' he said. (rms)(++++)
