he Indonesian Military (TNI) has yet to be informed about a tripartite agreement on the handling of Bangladeshi and Myanmarese migrants.
'We haven't been formally notified of the decision. I just read about it in the media,' TNI spokesman Maj. Gen. Fuad Basya told The Jakarta Post on Friday.
Indonesian Foreign Minister Retno LP Marsudi and her Malaysian and Thai counterparts, Anifah Aman and Gen. Tanasak Patimapragorn, signed a tripartite agreement in a meeting in Putrajaya, Malaysia, on Wednesday. The agreement states that the three countries will provide temporary shelter, food aid and medical treatment to Myanmarese and Banglasdeshi migrants stranded in their respective countries.
The three countries will coordinate with UN High Commissioner on Refugees (UNHCR) and the International Organization of Migration (IOM) to seek resettlement for the migrants in third countries.
Fuad, however, claimed that the TNI would continue helping migrants in distress, but only those who entered Indonesian territory.
'For the boats that are still outside Indonesia's territorial waters, we will help provide supplies of food, medicine and other assistance. Our search and rescue operations will continue,' he said. (++++)
