Activist Jopi Peranginangin was stabbed to death at a nightclub in Kemang, South Jakarta, after being involved in a dispute.
Jopi was known as being an activist for various causes, having been a member of the environmental group Sawit Watch, a 1998 reform era activist, a former member of the leftist People's Democratic Party (PRD) and one of President Joko 'Jokowi' Widodo volunteers during his presidential run in the 2014 election.
A witness, identified only as MF, stated that he was with Jopi and six other friends in the Venue bar in Kemang at 4 a.m., when the bar announced its closing.
'Some men then came and said: finish, out out! They looked drunk,' said MF at the South Jakarta Police station, on Saturday, as quoted by kompas.com.
One of Jopi's friends, identified as A, had said that he would leave, yet was met with a hostile look by one of the men.
Jopi tried to mediate the fight, but became involved in the fight instead. Several men were seen beating him in the parking lot in front of the nearby Habibie Center.
Even as Jopi was rescued, his friends realized that he has been stabbed by one of the men.
Jopi was brought to get medical treatment in the Pertamina Central Hospital (RSPP), but he passed away at 6 a.m. on Saturday.
The South Jakarta Police were investigating the case and questioning four witnesses. They also were checking the CCTV recording at the bar.
South Jakarta Police chief Sr. Comr. Wahyu Hadiningrat stated that the police did not know the motive behind the stabbing.
It is unclear whether the incident was related to Jopi's activism. (fsu)
