ndonesian Military (TNI) Army chief of staff Gen. Gatot Nurmantyo is scheduled to place the cornerstone for the construction of the Kasuari XVIII Military Command base in Arfai village, South Manokwari district, West Papua, on Tuesday.
'The new military command is named Kodam XVIII/Kasuari and is located in Arfai village. The ceremony will be led by Gen. Gatot,' Papua's Cenderawasih Military Command chief spokesman Let. Col. Teguh Puji Raharjo told The Jakarta Post on Monday.
'The land, owned by TNI AD, was owned by Rifle Company C and D, which have now moved to Warmare district,' said Teguh.
Command and supporting bases will be built during the initial stage of the project, including houses for high-ranking officers.
During the visit to Manokwari, Gatot is scheduled to visit Mansimam Island, a historical place for Papuans as it was the island on which German missionaries Carl Ottow and Johann Geissler initially set foot in 1855.
The island is home to a statue of Jesus Christ and is now an island for religious excursions.
