housewife and her daughter were attacked by a group of begal (violent robbers) on Jl. Gatot Subroto, Medan, North Sumatra, on Tuesday.
One of the victims, identified as Mahda Sariani Hutagalung, 50, died following the incident, while Estu Sagala, 27, a lecturer, suffered injuries.
The two victims were going home on a motorcycle after shopping at Sun Plaza in Medan. They were traveling along Jl. Gatot Subroto, when four robbers flanked them with their motorcycles. The robbers snatched one of the victim's bags causing the pair to fall off their motorcycle.
Passersby who saw the incident immediately provided help by taking the victims to the Sari Mutiara Hospital in Medan. However, a few hours after receiving treatment, Mahda, who suffered head injuries, died, while Estu, who suffered leg injuries, is still being treated at the hospital.
'My sister is still being treated at the hospital and my mother has been laid out at home,' said Okto Sagala, Estu's younger brother.
Sunggal Police chief Comr. Harry Azhar said police were still pursuing the perpetrators.
