he Stabat District Court in Langkat, North Sumatra, sentenced to death Furqon Yanuar, a 22-year-old resident of Pinyo Makmur village in Muara Baru, North Aceh, for trafficking 2.8 kilograms of shabu-shabu (crystal methamphetamine).
A panel of judges presided over by Sohe said in a court hearing on Wednesday that the defendant was proven guilty of trafficking drugs intended for sale, which was against the 2009 Narcotics Law.
The state prosecutor sought a 19-year prison sentence for the defendant in the previous hearing.
Kompas.com reported on Thursday that without any further consideration, the defendant and his lawyers said they would be appealing at a higher court.
Furqon, a motorcycle mechanic in Langkat, was arrested during a raid on a bus that he was traveling on from Lhokseumawe to Medan on Oct. 18, 2014.
He said he did not know the contents of the bag he was carrying, which belonged to his uncle in Bireun. (rms)(+++)
