Thirteen Indonesians held by a gambling company in Cambodia have been released unconditionally, an envoy said on Friday.
Indonesian Ambassador in Cambodia Pitono Purnomo said the 13 migrant workers had been repatriated to Pekanbaru, Riau, on Thursday.
'The negotiation [to release them] involved the Indonesian Embassy in Cambodia, the Foreign Ministry, Interpol Indonesia, the international relations department at the National Police and the Riau Police. No ransom money was involved,' Pitono said as quoted by Antara news agency, dismissing reports that the release had involved a huge amount of money.
He said the workers were 13 of a total of 23 Indonesians employed at the company. 'The embassy is still in the process of negotiation to release the other 10," he added.
The case attracted media attention after 16 of the migrant workers were reportedly detained by Dialong Company Ltd. gambling firm two weeks ago, as their Indonesian recruiter allegedly fled.
The recruiter, JS, from Selat Panjang, Riau, went missing after allegedly making off with Rp 2.1 billion (US$158,755) from the firm, leading the company to detain the 16 migrant workers.(++++)
