he long dispute over the leadership of the Golkar Party reached its end on Saturday as Aburizal Bakrie and Agung Laksono signed a reconciliation agreement in Jakarta.
The signing ceremony was held in the backyard of Vice President Jusuf Kalla's residence.
The long awaited reconciliation was prompted by the upcoming regional elections. Golkar's eligibility to participate was threatened by the conflict between the Aburizal and Agung camps. Now that things are settled, the party should be able to participate in the elections.
Kalla, a former Golkar chairman, has been leading the reconciliation efforts between the two camps ever since the Jakarta State Administrative Court (PTUN) ruled in favor of Aburizal to invalidate a law and human rights minister decree on the recognition of Agung's camp.
The signing was witnessed by Kalla and was followed by handshakes from the two rival leaders of the Golkar Party.
Several Golkar politicians observed the event including Ade Komaruddin, Yorrys Raweyai, Priyo Budi Santoso and Theo Sambuaga. (fsu)(++++)
