National scene: TNI only allows hijab for soldiers in Aceh

I

ndonesian Military (TNI) chief Gen. Moeldoko says the TNI will only allow female soldiers in Aceh to wear a hijab on the job.

'€œWe have decided there is no prohibition [on wearing the hijab]. If [you] want to wear the hijab then [you will be] transferred to Aceh. End of discussion,'€ he said in response to a question on the issue from a woman soldier in Surabaya, East Java, on Friday.

'€œIn principle, we are not rigid. We are accommodative,'€ he said as quoted by Antara news agency.

Aceh is the only region where Islamic law is fully enforced.

The National Police has recently accommodated female officers who want to wear the hijab at work, permitting them to wear it in certain colors.
