Megawati inaugurates new PDI-P headquarters on Pancasila Day

ndonesian Democratic Party of Struggle (PDI-P) chairwoman Megawati Soekarnoputri chose Pancasila Day, which falls on June 1, to inaugurate the party's new headquarters on Monday.

'€œI chose the date [June 1] because as we know, our congress decided that our [PDI-P] ideology is Pancasila,'€ she said in a speech at the headquarters on Jl. Diponegoro, Menteng, Central Jakarta, on Monday.

She was referring to the party's second congress in 2005, during which Pancasila was declared the party'€™s ideology.

Pancasila Day marks the day when Megawati'€™s father, former president Sukarno, introduced the five principles of Pancasila on June 1, 1945.

The new headquarters, the construction of which started in May 2014, replaces the party'€™s former headquarters in Lenteng Agung, South Jakarta.

Party secretary-general Hasto Kristiyanto said the party would hold most of its activities at the Jl. Diponogoro premises.

"The Lenteng Agung office will house the party's organizations, such as Repdem [party volunteers] and Bamusi [Islamic wing]," Hasto said on the sidelines of the ceremony.

Construction of the five-story building reportedly cost Rp 42.6 billion and was funded by contributions by party members over the past five years. The building has a two-level basement for parking. (fsu/nvn)
