Rote Ndao Police chief Adj. Comr. Hidayat said on Wednesday that the police held the asylum seekers after they were stranded at Landunit Beach. They were then evacuated to Kupang, East Nusa Tenggara.
"They were saved by local fishermen before being handled by the police," Hidayat said as quoted by tempo.co on Wednesday.
The Rohingyas were from Myanmar (one person), Sri Lanka (54) and Bangladesh (10). "Three of them are children and four are women," Hidayat said.
Kajuran, one of the migrants from Sri Lanka, said he wanted to seek asylum in Australia because of the difficult life in his home country. He claimed that each of the asylum seekers had paid US$6,000 to certain people to reach Australia.(+++)
