griculture Minister Ferry Mursyidan Baldan announced on Thursday that his ministry would prepare plots of land on which to relocate people affected by natural disasters in disaster-prone regions.

"The land plots will be close to residential areas," Ferry said as quoted by Antara news agency.

Relocation preparations are expected to be carried out long before disasters occur so that losses can be minimized whenever a disaster hits a particular area, he said.

"That's why the relocation sites should be close to their former residential areas so that whenever they are forced to move, it will not be too burdensome," Ferry said.

The relocation sites will be in forest or plantation areas, or if the government is forced to buy the land it will do so, he said.

The minister said that initial focus would be on the southern parts of Java, which were prone to various disasters like earthquakes, tsunamis, volcanic eruptions, landslides and flooding.

Later it will be expanded to other disaster-prone areas like Padang in West Sumatra and Mount Sinabung in North Sumatra, he added. (hhr)(++++)
