Selection team to approach credible figures to join KPK

A

newly established committee tasked with selecting commissioners for the Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) will be proactive in looking for credible candidates to join the recruitment process.

One of the team'€™s nine members, Yenti Garnasih, said on Wednesday that in addition to the open registration process expected to kick off on Friday, in which all eligible candidates can register themselves at the State Secretariat Office, the team would also personally approach individuals deemed to have clean track records.

Yenti said that the team would not announce the names of the figures until they decided to apply for the job, adding that revealing their names to the public prior to the opening of the registration could potentially discourage them from taking the next step.

'€œThis is not discrimination against other candidates. This is only to encourage them to apply. If they later decide to register with the team then they will, of course, undergo the same process of selection like regular candidates,'€ Yenti said on Wednesday.

Yenti said the team would approach candidates from various background including judges and legal experts with unblemished track records.

The team'€™s spokesman, Betti S. Alisjahbana, said that so far responses from candidates had been encouraging, with some prospective candidates expressing their interest directly to the team days before the registration was open.

'€œLots of people have expressed interest. I won'€™t mention their names because they have yet to officially register with the team. I don'€™t want them to suddenly change their mind before registering themselves,'€ Betti said.

Betti also said that the team had met with KPK leaders to ask for their recommendations regarding criteria for the next batch of commissioners.

'€œThere are 17 criteria that the KPK has recommended to the team. Some of them match with our expectations and some are new recommendation to us,'€ Betti said.

The team said it would involve the National Police, the KPK and the Financial Transaction Reports and Analysis Centre (PPATK) as well as the Attorney General'€™s Office (AGO) to determine whether candidates for the KPK commissioner jobs had criminal records that could compromise their roles if they were elected.

Separately, Judicial Commissioner (KY) deputy chairman Imam Anshori Saleh said on Wednesday that he was considering running for a KPK role.

'€œMany people have encouraged me to run and that leads me to the conclusion that I could apply for the job. It is a call for me to devote my time to the country'€™s corruption eradication campaign. If I am needed to fill the post then, for sure, I will be ready for it,'€ Imam told The Jakarta Post on Wednesday.

The committee is seeking to select five new commissioners to replace current KPK leaders who are slated to wrap up their tenures in December. It will propose eight candidates to be sent to the House of Representatives for fit and proper tests in the future.

The eight will join two candidates picked by a selection team set up by then president Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono: former KPK commissioner Busyro Muqoddas and Cabinet Secretariat Office international relations division head Robby Arya.

The House will select five of the ten candidates through the fit and proper tests, for the president to approve before inaugurating them in December.
