ocial Affairs Minister Khofifah Indar Parawansa has said that according to Government Regulation No. 54/2007 on adoption, an adoptive mother was required to meet a number of requirements before being allowed to adopt a child.
In an interview with Net.Television Station on Friday, Khofifah said that besides meeting technical requirements, a prospective adoptive mother also had to follow certain legal procedures for an adoption to be valid.
Requirements for foreign couples adopting Indonesian children
1. Must obtain permit from their government through their embassy in Indonesia
2. Must obtain permit from the Social Affairs Ministry, Law and Human Rights Ministry
3. Adoptions are conducted through an orphanage, the Foreign Ministry, the Health Ministry and the National Police
4. A prospective adoptive mother must have lived in Indonesia for at least for two years
5. Must sign an official statement that the children's development will be reported to the Foreign Ministry through the Indonesian Embassy in the respective country
6. Must meet all requirements set for adoption by Indonesian couples
Adoption procedures for foreign couples
1. Must meet all requirements for adoption
2. Must submit adoption permit to the religious court (for Muslims) or the district court (for non-Muslims)
3. Must gain approval from the religious or district court
4. The court then hands decision to relevant authorities.(+++)
