n earthquake measuring 5.8 on the Richter scale rocked Timor Island, in the Belu regency in East Nusa Tenggara (NTT) on Tuesday, Sudaryono, the head of the Kupang office of the Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BKPMD) said.

Sudaryono said that the epicenter of the earthquake, which took place at 1:40 a.m. local time, was located at latitude 9.96 degrees south and longitude 125.13 degrees east.

"The quake did not have the potential to cause a tsunami, but we've asked residents to be on the alert for any possible bigger aftershock," he said.

He further explained that it was the third earthquake that jolted the NTT province this month. The first took place on Sumba Island on June 4 and measured 4.2 on the Richter scale, followed by a second that hit the same island on June 11 and measured 5.2 on the Richter scale. (hhr)(+++)
