drug inmate on Nusakambangan Island, Central Java, died on Monday after being involved in a duel with another inmate several days beforehand.
Slamet Gonggo, a 40-year-old resident of Rejowinangun, Magelang, Central Java, who was scheduled to be released this October after serving his five-year prison sentence, died while being treated for serious bodily injuries at the Cilacap Regional Hospital.
The spokesman for the penitentiary section at the Central Java Provincial Law and Human Rights Affairs Agency, A. Yuspahruddin, confirmed the incident on Tuesday and said Slamet suffered serious injuries after dueling with Daeng, a 51-year-old resident of Jeneponto in South Sulawesi who is serving a 12-year sentence for murder.
Yuspahruddin said his agency reported the case to the police for further investigation.
'We don't know cause of the bloody duel. We suspect it was a personal matter between the two inmates. The dead victim's body has been already handed over to his family in Magelang for a funeral while Daeng has been put in police custody,' he added.
The chief detective of the Cilacap police, Adj. Comr. Agus Sulistianto, said the duel was triggered by envy and the police would process the case in accordance with the law.(+++)
