T

he head of the House of Representatives'€™ Commission I overseeing intelligence, defense and foreign affairs, Mahfudz Siddiq, said on Tuesday that fit and proper tests for the candidate to be National Intelligence Agency (BIN) chief, Sutiyoso, and the candidate to be Indonesian Military commander, Gen. Gatot Nurmantyo, would be likely conducted in two weeks.

Both tests would take place on either June 29 or June 30, he said.

The Prosperous Justice Party (PKS) lawmaker said the commission was currently waiting for an order to hold the screening tests from the House'€™s steering committee (Bamus). The plenary meeting to discuss the test schedule was set to be held on Thursday after Bamus concluded their assessment.

'€œToday, the commission is holding an internal meeting to discuss the mechanism of the fit and proper tests. Hopefully, we would have already held the plenary meeting by Thursday. One thing that is certain is that we will strive to get it all done before the next recess period,'€ Mahfudz said at the House complex on Tuesday.

He added Sutiyoso had reported his resignation as a member of his Indonesian Justice and Unity Party (PKPI), which he considered a good move for the former Jakarta governor because it would reflect his neutrality in handling duties as BIN chief.

Meanwhile, Commission I will also discuss its plan to establish a BIN supervisory committee on Tuesday, during which Mahfudz will ask each party faction in the commission to contribute one member each for the committee.

The establishment of the BIN supervisory committee is aimed at supervising the intelligence agency'€™s operations, as well as at holding independent investigations if BIN is thought to have operated in a way that violates the law. (ebf)(+++)
