President urged to strengthen KPK in law revision

P

resident Joko '€œJokowi'€ Widodo should hopefully strengthen the Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) during the revision of Law No.30/2002 on the antigraft body, which has been included in the 2015 National Legislation Program (Prolegnas), an official is saying.

'€œI'€™m certain President Jokowi will not do irreparable damage on his commitment to strengthen the KPK,'€ KPK acting deputy chairman Johan Budi said as quoted by Antara in Jakarta on Wednesday.

During a meeting with the House of Representatives'€™ legislative body, Law and Human Rights Minister Yasonna Hamonangan Laoly confirmed that the revision of the 2002 KPK law had been included in the 2015 Prolegnas as a House initiative.

Among the articles to be revised is the one that stipulates the KPK'€™s wiretapping authority in a bid to prevent human rights violations during anticorruption investigations. In the revised law, wiretapping will be directed only against parties whose legal examination has been processed.

There will be also reviews of the KPK'€™s prosecutorial authority, which will be synergized with the Attorney General'€™s Office's (AGO) authority.

'€œIf the revision of the KPK law is aimed at amputating the body'€™s prosecutorial authority and reducing its wiretapping authority, the public'€™s initial perception that there has been a systematic effort to weaken the KPK and its corruption eradication efforts will be proven,'€ said Johan.
