ouse of Representatives deputy speaker FahriHamzah commented on recent reports about an apparent influx ofunskilled workers from China into Indonesia, saying that the ManpowerMinistry needs to verify them.
Several lawmakers from the House of Representatives' commission VI overseeing industries and corporations previously said the influx of Chinese workers could threaten Indonesia's workforce balance and increase unemployment.
Fahri called on the Manpower Ministry to find reasons behind the easy work permits apparently given to unskilled Chinese workers, overlooking the many unemployed Indonesians who might be able to fill the positions.
'The ministry must explain what policy allows this to happen and why and for what sectors,' the Prosperous Justice Party (PKS) lawmaker said on Monday.
He added that more Indonesian workers, mostly the young, have been questioning the emphasis on bringing foreigners into the workforce, saying that Indonesia has workers that can be employed in most sectors.(dmr)
