House of Representatives deputy speaker Fahri Hamzah says that political financing is the key to eradicating corruption as it prevents private funds from being used in political matters
ouse of Representatives deputy speaker FahriHamzah says that political financing is the key to eradicatingcorruption as it prevents private funds from being used in politicalmatters.
He explained that a political party's funds should come either from the government's coffers or from private funds that have been disclosed to the public. Party benefactors should also be given government protection in order for the benefactor's money to not be counted as bribes.
The Prosperous Justice Party (PKS) politician added that the initial proposal to grant each party between 10 and 20 percent of its funding from the state came from Home Minister Tjahjo Kumolo himself, noting that his recent rejection of the plan only makes the government's stance more baffling.
'Political financing needs to be regulated technically. It was initially the government's idea about the political party funding. How come they now retract the statement and say the parties are being greedy? Please be clear on your stance,' Fahri told reporters at the House of Representatives complex on Monday.
In order to avoid contradictions such as these, he said, the best thing to do is to have President Joko 'Jokowi' Widodo speak with the House itself to fully clarify conflicting matters. (dmr)
