Crashed Indonesian military airplane one of many

An Indonesian Air Force Hercules crashed on Tuesday noon into a residential area in the capital city of North Sumatra, Medan.

The crash was the latest in a long string of accidents involving military aircraft belonged to the Indonesian Army (TNI), which is raising questions about maintenance.

The following is a list of incidents involving military aircraft from over the past 10 years. Most accidents involved planes that had been operating for more than 20 years.

Nov. 9, 2013

An Army Mi-17 helicopter crashed at Pujungan in Malinau district, North Kalimantan, near the Indonesian-Malaysian border. Thirteen people died while six survived the accident. The helicopter had been delivering supplies from Tarakan in North Kalimantan to border security guards in Malinau.

Oct. 11, 2013

Bad weather forced an Army helicopter, a Russian-made MI-17, to land around 600 meters from the runway in Okbibab District, Pegunungan Bintang regency. There was minor damage to the helicopter, but no casualties.

Aug. 24, 2013

The Indonesian Military (TNI) says a door from one of its training helicopters, a Russian-made MI-17, fell into a residential area in Penjaringan, North Jakarta. No one harmed but the door damaged a house and car.

July 4, 2013

An Indonesian Air Force glider crashed in Subang, killing the sole aviator, Edmund Edward Fele, 28. Suryadharma Air Force Base chief, Col. Eding Sungkana said the pilot lost control.

June 11, 2013

A red Hughes 300C training helicopter, owned by the Army Flight Training Center, crashed onto the Charlie taxiway at the Ahmad Yani Army Airbase in Semarang, Central Java. The chopper was severely damaged, but no explosion was reported. A student pilot, Second Lieut. Alexius, and a flight instructor, Maj. Masrukin, were injured.

Jan. 6, 2012

A training aircraft, a T-34 Charlie, crashed at Kedungsari in Magelang, Central Java. One person died.

June 21, 2012

A Fokker 27 A2708 plane belonging to the Indonesian Air Force crashed at a housing complex in Rajawali near Halim Perdanakusuma Airport, East Jakarta. Ten people died (seven passengers and three residents).

April 28, 2011

An unpowered Air Force glider crashed at a sugar cane plantation in Brebah, Sleman, Yogyakarta. Flight instructor First Sgt. Ninang Siwiyono and cadet Sgt. Habibut Rohman died.

June 2010

A Korean-made two-seater KT-1B "Wong Bee" plane crash was the first involving a new military aircraft. Previous military aircraft accidents, which were mostly fatal, involved planes that had been operating for more than 20 years.

May 20, 2009

A C-130 Hercules plane carrying troops and their families caught fire and nosedived into a residential neighborhood in Magetan, East Java, killing 101 people, mostly civilians.

June 5, 2009

A 30-year-old Air Force helicopter crashed into the Air Force's Atang Sendjaja air base in Bogor, just south of Jakarta, killing four and injuring three.

April 7, 2009

A Fokker F-27 medium transport plane, carrying 18 soldiers from the Air Force's Special Forces (Paskhas), crashed into the hangar at Husein Sastranegara Airport, Bandung, killing all passengers and six crew members.

March 11, 2008

A Bell-47G Soloy helicopter, an Air Force training chopper, crashed into a sugarcane plantation and burst into flames in Manyingsal village in Subang regency, West Java, killing the pilot and seriously wounding a crew member.

June 27, 2008

A Casa-212 military aircraft crashed in Mount Salak, Bogor, West Java, killed 18 passengers, including three foreigners.

Oct. 30, 2007

An Air Force jet fighter skidded off the runway at Sultan Syarif Kasim airport in Pekanbaru, Riau province, flipping over 200 meters from the end of the runway. No casualties were reported.

Nov. 21, 2006

An Air Force Hawk 209 crashed at Sultan Syarif Kasim II, Pekanbaru, Riau because of engine failure. No casualties were reported. (ric/ika)(+++)
