n Indonesia military (TNI) Hercules cargo aircraft has crashed into a residential area on Jl. Jamin Ginting, near Polonia Airport in North Sumatra's capital of Medan, shortly after taking off on Tuesday afternoon.
According to witnesses, the aircraft crashed at around 11:30 a.m. local time after it gradually lost altitude before nosediving. Many are feared to have been killed in the incident as the aircraft crashed into a busy area.
No officials have issued any details of the incident yet, but airport staffers said the aircraft was heading towards Tanjung Pinang, Riau Islands, to transport freight. The aircraft was delivered to Indonesia in 1964. (ren)
