resident Joko 'Jokowi' Widodo has said the government is examining incentives for the development of environmentally friendly electricity plants in Indonesia with a hope that investors will become more attracted to developing the sector.
'One incentive we could provide relates to electricity purchasing prices, but we will later discuss it further,' Jokowi said as quoted by Antara.
The President was speaking on the sidelines of a ceremony to mark the official opening of state-owned oil and gas company Pertamina's Kamojang geothermal power plant Unit 5 in Kamojang, Bandung regency, West Java, on Sunday morning.
Jokowi said it was expected within the next five years, Indonesia's electricity needs could be fulfilled by environmentally friendly electricity plants.
'We have 28,000 Megawatts (MW) of electricity potentials from geothermal sources and on top of that we have many other environmentally friendly energy sources, such as solar, waves [and] wind,' he said.
Apart from inaugurating the official operation of Kamojang geothermal power plant on Sunday, President Jokowi also initiated the development of several geothermal-fueled power plants (PLTP) in several regions across Indonesia to push forward the increase of national electricity production.
Other construction projects are: PLTP Ulubelu Unit 3 and 4 in Tanggamus regency, Lampung; PLTP Lahendong Unit 5 in Minahasa regency, North Sulawesi; PLTP Karaha Unit 1, West Java; PLTP Lumut Balai 1 and 2 in South Sumatra; PLTP Hululais Unit 1 Bengkulu; and PLTP Kerinci Unit 1 Jambi.
The event, which was held at the Pertamina Geothermal Energy Area complex in Kamojang, Bandung regency was also attended by State-Owned Enterprises Minister Rini Soemarno, Coordinating Maritime Affairs Minister Indroyono Soesilo, Trade Minister Rachmat Gobel, West Java Governor Deddy Mizwar, Pertamina president director Dwi Soetjipto and Pertamina geothermal energy director Irvan Zainuddin.
