ast Kalimantan Governor Awang Faroek Ishak has called on state-owned oil and gas company Pertamina, on behalf of the government, to ensure that the distribution of gas via pipelines reaches the homes of East Kalimantan residents.
'Gas distributed by pipeline must stream up to kitchens in the residents' houses,' he said on Sunday.
The governor added that industrial complexes must also get an adequate supply of gas to accelerate industrial growth in the province.
'The most important thing is don't let our people face difficulties fulfilling their fuel needs, having to queue for hours only to get fuel,' said Awang.
Since 2009, the allotment of the Mahakam block's participating interests has caused heated debate. Initially, East Kalimantan and Kutai Kartanegara administrations requested a participating interest of 30 percent before they later reduced their demand to 19 percent. Both administrations then agreed to a 10 percent participating interest as long as the government, in this regard Pertamina, could fulfill energy needs in the province and regency optimally.
In his final decision, President Joko Widodo rejected the East Kalimantan administration's request for a 19 percent participating interest in the Mahakam block. (ebf)
