housands of hectares of paddy fields in Lebak regency, Banten, are facing harvest failure as a result of a long dry season that is preventing them from getting proper irrigation.
Paddy fields that are in danger of suffering harvest failure can be found in 28 districts, with the most severe situation being in Warunggunung, Kalanganyar and Cibadak districts, where the soil in the paddy fields has hardened and cracked because of severe drought.
Pitriani, a local agricultural extension officer in Warunggunung, said at least 1,700 hectares of paddy fields in the district were enduring drought as the volume of available water in nearby Cilembu Lake is at a critical level.
'We are afraid that paddy fields that have no surface water supply will face harvest failure,' Pitriani said over the weekend as quoted by Antara news agency.
