T

he Belu Military District of East Nusa Tenggara has thwarted an attempt to smuggle 2.4 tons of sugar from Timor Leste.

'€œThe illegal sugar was brought here using a truck from the border area in Lamaksenulu hamlet, Lamaknen district, Belu regency. The driver admitted that the sugar was smuggled from Timor Leste, '€ the military district commander Lt. Col. Mochammad Nanang Nazmudin told The Jakarta Post on Sunday.

Nanang said the military officers arrested the driver, Nicholaus Loe, 24, who drove the truck at a high speed through the area on Friday and later found the 49 sacks of Thai sugar, which belonged to a trader named Aloysius Lay from Atambua, Belu, in the truck.

He said Nicholaus and his truck loaded with the sugar were still in the military headquarters. The driver is being held for questioning. '€œWe will hand over them to the police tomorrow,'€ he added.
