A

group of robbers accused of stealing Rp 1.4 billion (US$105,172) in cash has reportedly confessed to the Jakarta Police to donating some of the money to the construction of a mosque in Indramayu, West Java.

Last week, three men stole a van belonging to cash-delivery company PT Armorindo Artha; the van was transporting Rp 1.4 billion in banknotes to refill ATMs in South Jakarta. One of the perpetrators has been identified as Erik, a driver employed by the company.

'€œThe perpetrators said they had donated around Rp 30 million from the money that they stole for the building of a mosque in Indramayu,'€ police investigator Comr. Arsa said as quoted by tempo.co on Saturday.

The Jakarta Police'€™s general crimes directorate chief Sr. Comr. Krishna Murti said the police had retrieved Rp 1 billion, with the remainder still unaccounted for.

The police have also seized two cars and an axe related to the case.

Krishna added that Erik had used his inside knowledge to commit the crime.

It is alleged that Erik conspired with his two friends, Toyo and Udin, to follow the van in their cars until an opportunity to steal the vehicle presented itself.

Erik and his purported accomplices could face a prison sentence of up to four years. (ika)(++++)
