he city administration is set to develop low-cost apartments (rusunawa) specifically for contract workers employed in Jakarta's five municipalities.
City secretary Saefullah said that many of the city's contract workers lived in indecent and alarming conditions with some even living in makeshift homes on riverbanks or under elevated roads.
The city administration employs contract workers for small physical activities, such as collecting garbage and maintaining parks and cemeteries. The workers are usually employed by the Sanitation agencies as well as the Parks and Cemetery agencies at the municipality level.
'The contract workers have a great responsibility to keep our city clean. However, the living conditions of some of our contract workers is worrisome,' Saefullah said at City Hall on Tuesday.
He said that the administration would include the low-cost apartment construction program in the 2016 city budget and reserve apartments for those who do not have houses.
