ndonesian Democratic Party of Struggle (PDI-P) secretary-general Hasto Kristiyanto on Wednesday answered Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) summons to give testimony as a witness in a graft case surrounding the arrangement of a mining business permit in Tanah Laut regency, South Kalimantan. Kalimantan-based company PT Mitra Maju Sukses is accused of paying bribes to a House of Representatives member, Adriansyah.
'As the PDI-P central executive board announced on April 2 that we did not need any funds from our House faction members, it is clear that there is no connection between us and Adriansyah. However, we must first listen to the KPK's reasoning,' said Hasto as quoted by Antara shortly after he arrived at the antigraft body's headquarters in Jakarta on Wednesday.
The KPK has named Mitra Maju Sukses marketing manager Andrew Hidayat a suspect for allegedly bribing Adriansyah.
Earlier, Andrew's lawyer, Bambang Hartono, said his client gave Rp 2.05 billion (US$153,750) in bribes, comprising Rp 1 billion, $50,000 and S$50,000, to Adriansyah as financial aid for the organizing of the PDI-P congress in Bali. The KPK arrested Adriansyah on April 9 before the lawmaker could hand over the money to the congress' organizing committee.
'One month and again one week before the congress, the PDI-P executive board asserted that we did not need any financial support because we had enough both from internal sources and supporters [..] to organize the congress,' said Hasto.
He added that Adriansyah had had no roles at the congress except as an observer with no participation in decision-making.
'His role in the congress was just as an observer. As an observer, he had the right to speak but not to take part in making decisions,' said Hasto.
As such, Hasto said, he was certain that no funds had been given by Adriansyah to the party during the Bali congress.
'We received no money from Adriansyah. That has been confirmed. Long before the congress, we insisted that we did not need any financial support from our House faction members,' he said. (ebf)
