he ongoing eruption of Mount Raung in East Java has disrupted many flights to Bali and has badly affected tourism on the resort island, an executive said on Tuesday.
'For sure, it has impacted tourism since many tourists have cancelled their holidays to Bali,' Chairman of the Indonesian Tourism Industry Association (GIPI) Bali chapter, Ngurah Wijaya, told The Jakarta Post, adding that the losses have not yet been calculated.
Before the eruption, Ngurah said that every day an average 8,000 to 9,000 tourists came to Bali. 'Unfortunately, the disaster occurred during the peak season. You can imagine how many hotel rooms were empty due to the cancellations.'
Ngurah Rai International Airport, one of the country's busiest airports, and four other airports in East Java and West Nusa Tenggara, were closed from Thursday night until Saturday morning due to safety concerns following the eruption. The closure led to the cancelation of more than 300 flights in and out of Bali.
