First Lady Iriana Jokowi received on Wednesday the honor of having the Dendrobium Iriana Jokowi orchid named after her during a visit to the National Orchid Garden in the Singapore Botanic Gardens.
'It's really an honor for me to have an orchid from Singapore named after me, Iriana Joko Widodo,' she said as quoted by seskab.go.id.
The First Lady visited the National Orchid Garden at the end of the state visit of President Joko 'Jokowi' Widodo to Singapore on Wednesday morning.
The Dendrobium orchid is a hybrid between Dendrobium christabella and Dendrobium haldis morterud.
Commenting on the naming of the orchid hybrid after his wife, Jokowi said it was 'flower diplomacy', in which flowers were used as a tool to strengthen relations between Indonesia and Singapore.
'It's really incredible! Strengthening a friendship can be carried out not only via a formal meeting, a meeting between two diplomats. This can be conducted by having an orchid hybrid named after my wife, Iriana Jokowi. The way to strengthen a friendship like this is really impressive. This is a flower diplomacy,' said Jokowi.
When journalists asked her whether she had grew flowers at home, the First Lady diplomatically responded: 'I don't have a collection of flowers; but yes, I have some flowers at home. We cannot take care of orchids the way I would like. Taking care of an orchid must be done with the heart,' said Iriana.
President Jokowi added: 'We have not only some flowers, but many flowers in our home.'
Dendrobium Iriana Jokowi is a Dendrobium orchid hybrid measuring an average 5.6 centimeters with white petals that have shining yellow brownish nuances. When it blooms, the orchid becomes light reddish purple.
Coordinating Human Development and Culture Minister Puan Maharani, Foreign Minister Retno Marsudi and Administrative and Bureaucratic Reform Minister Yuddy Chrisnandi also attended the orchid naming event at the Singapore Botanic Gardens.(edn/ebf)(+++)
