he Religious Affairs Ministry will collaborate with the Indonesian Consulate General in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, to assist 11 Indonesian citizens detained by the Saudi police.
"We are coordinating with our friends in Jeddah to find out more information about these citizens, who are undergoing questioning," said director general for haj and umrah Abdul Djamil as quoted by kemenag.go.id on Saturday.
The Indonesians, two of whom are women, are being held at the Mecca temporary custody office. The group reportedly believe that this year's Idul Fitri fell on July 18, as opposed to the Saudi government's stipulation that it was on July 17. They also acknowledge their leader as Imam Mahdi, or the leader of umat (followers of Islam) who will appear at doomsday.
The leader of the group, Zubair Amir Abdullah, 47, has been taken to an asylum to undergo psychiatric examination.
According to Abdul, the ministry is involved because the group was in Saudi Arabia on umrah (minor pilgrimage).
"That is why we are working together with the consulate general on the matter. But we cannot just step in as they are still undergoing questioning," said Abdul. (edn/kes)(++++)
