Damaged coral reefs in several spots in the Thousand Islands are set to be restored on Aug. 16, according to a report on beritajakarta.com.
"The coral restoration project will be held simultaneously all over Indonesia on Aug. 16," said the regency's spokesperson, Budi Utomo, as quoted by beritajakarta.com on Friday.
According to Budi, the activity is part of a program initiated by the Indonesian Marine Corps in cooperation with regional authorities to rehabilitate coral reefs. The corps will be providing the live coral to be planted on site.
Budi added that the Thousand Islands regency has also coordinated with the Marine and Food Security Agency to involve the public in the activity.
"Hopefully there will be many communities and college students participating in the event, which is also part of Indonesia's Independence Day celebration on Aug. 17," said Budi. (kes)(++++)
