Lawyer provided to assist victims of violence in Cairo: Embassy

T

he Indonesian Embassy in Cairo, Egypt, said on Sunday that it had hired an Egyptian lawyer to assist Indonesian victims in a robbery case.

'€œThe embassy has requested Yaser Gamaludin Hamam, an Egyptian national, to give legal assistance to the victims,'€ said the embassy'€™s head of consular and protocol affairs, Windratmo Suwarno, as quoted by Antara.

He said local police were handling the case.

The head of information and social and culture affairs at the embassy in Cairo, Lautia Nia Astri Sutedja, said the embassy had coordinated with Egyptian security authorities on Saturday with regard to the incident that involved five Indonesian citizens in Nasr City, Cairo.

She said the incident began when Edy Yusuf and his wife were approached by five armed robbers at around midnight on Saturday.

The robbers stabbed Edy and his friend, Mahdi Ali, and stole US$10,000 in cash, a laptop, 13 cell phones and a number of electronic devices.

'€œThe robbers also attempted to rape Edy'€™s wife and her female friend,'€ said Lautia.

The Indonesian Embassy is calling on Egyptian security authorities to boost their security and to guarantee the security of Indonesian citizens in Egypt. The embassy is also urging all Indonesian citizens in Egypt to be on alert and encourages them to report all crimes to local security authorities and the Indonesian Embassy.

'€œThe embassy'€™s consular affairs section has provided a hotline at 01022229989. All Indonesian citizens can phone us to report any security disruptions,'€ said Lautia. (ebf)(+++)
