24-year-old woman was sexually assaulted at the Jati Padang crossing bridge in South Jakarta after getting off a Transjakarta bus on Saturday morning.
According to a statement released by the Pasar Minggu Police on Sunday, the woman screamed and a Transjakarta officer at the bus shelter immediately chased after the perpetrator. A nearby on-duty traffic policeman also helped apprehend the suspect, who was later identified as Andri Afriyantoro.
Pasar Minggu Police spokesman Doddy F. Sanjaya said, as quoted by kompas.com, that the suspect was on the same Transjakarta bus as the victim and decided to follow her. The suspect will be charged with violating Article 281 of the Criminal Code on indecent acts that violate social norms, which carries a maximum sentence of two years and eight months.
City-owned PT Transjakarta president director ANS Kosasih said the company and the City Police planned to sign a memorandum of understanding on cooperation to increase safety measures at Transjakarta bus shelters in the near future. 'We also plan to provide women-only buses once we have enough buses,' he said.
