A investigative team from the Attorney General's Office (AGO)confiscated electric cars on Tuesday that the State-Owned Enterprises (SOE) Ministry had given to several universities, one of which was Gadjah Mada University (UGM).
'They were confiscated as evidence in an alleged graft case with Dasep Ahmadi as a suspect. The electric cars could not be used because Dasep was unable to manufacture the cars in line with an agreement he made with the ministry,' the investigative team chief, Victor Antonius, told The Jakarta Post on Tuesday.
The AGO arrested Dasep on July 28 and he has been held at the Salemba detention facility in Central Jakarta since then.
Accompanied by several officials from the Yogyakarta Prosecutors' Office, Victor and his team confiscated an electric car given to UGM at around 9:30 a.m. on Tuesday. They wrapped the white car, which was parked at the university's bicycle repair shop, with a red and white ribbon with the words 'Kejaksaan Agung RI' (Indonesian Attorney General's Office) written on it. A confiscation letter was placed on the car's windshield.
'On Thursday, we will confiscate two electric cars granted to the Surabaya Institute of Technology [ITS] and the University of Brawijaya [Unibraw] in Malang,' said Victor.
He said the AGO would confiscate 16 electric cars and one vehicle called Evina, an abbreviation for 'Electric Vehicle Indonesia', worth Rp 2 billion (US$148,000) in total. It was predicted that the electric car manufacturing project inflicted Rp 32 billion in financial losses on the state. The project procurement was taken from the 2013 State Budget.
'We will continue to investigate into whether or not it was related to an alleged corruption case involving former SOE Minister Dahlan Iskan,' said Victor.
UGM spokesperson Wiwit Wijayanti said the university received the car from state-owned oil and gas company Pertamina some time in November 2014. She said the university had never used the car with plate number B 2422 XTW, since it was granted for research purposes.
The cars were reportedly manufactured for transportation purposes during the Asia Pacific Economic Community (APEC) meeting in Bali in 2013. The SOE Ministry granted the cars to UGM, ITS, Unibraw and other universities, such as the University of Indonesia (UI), Bandung Institute of Technology (ITB) and the University of Riau, since the cars could not be manufactured on time.
