Graft suspect governor wants KPK to handle his case

N

orth Sumatra governor Gatot Pujo Nugroho, via his lawyer, Razman Arif Nasution, has expressed his wish that the investigation of his alleged misappropriation of social assistance (Bansos) funds could be handled by the Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK), instead of the Attorney General'€™s Office (AGO).

'€œAgain, I'€™m hoping with all my heart that the AGO and the North Sumatra Prosecutors'€™ Office [Kejati] can accept this wholeheartedly. The investigation of the alleged misappropriation of the Bansos funds, school operational assistance [BOS] funds and natural resource shared revenues [DBH] should be fully handed over to the KPK so that the investigation can be more focused,'€ said Razman as quoted by Antara at the anti-graft commission building in Jakarta on Tuesday.

On Monday, the KPK detained Gatot at the Cipinang detention facility, after naming him a suspect in an alleged bribery case involving the Medan State Administrative Court (PTUN) chief justice, two other judges and a court clerk. The governor'€™s second wife, Evi Susanti, was detained at the Class I detention facility in East Jakarta on the same charge. They were detained straightaway after attending a questioning as suspects in the bribery case.

The case started with the AGO's decision to take over the investigation of the Bansos case which allegedly involved a number of North Sumatra provincial administration officials. The province'€™s administration filed a pretrial petition against the corruption investigation conducted by AGO with the PTUN Medan, saying the Kejati had investigated the case.

Razman said the alleged Bansos fund corruption had occurred since Rudolf Pardede served as the North Sumatra governor for the period of 2006-2008.

'€œThe Bansos case has been occurring since Governor Rudolf Pardede'€™s administration. It should be made clear whether this case stands alone or if it is related to the current Regional Legislative Council [DPRD] members or to those from previous periods,'€ said Razman.

'€œThis case must be investigated thoroughly so that we know what has happened in North Sumatra, and why its regional leaders have continued to face legal problems,'€ he went on.

Earlier, Attorney General HM Prasetyo asserted that the AGO would continue to handle the alleged Bansos funds corruption case in North Sumatra.

'€œWe will continue to investigate the case. The case'€™s predicate crimes, handled by both the KPK and the AGO are different. KPK will continue its investigation on the bribery case while [the AGO] will continue handling the alleged misappropriation of the Bansos funds,'€ said Prasetyo on last Tuesday. (ebf)
