total of 624 cases of violations of regional regulations (Perda) have added Rp 39 million (US$2,900) worth of fines to the treasury fund, according to head of South Jakarta Public Order Agency (Satpol PP) Bambang Budiwibowo.
Out of that number, up to 368 cases went to trial at the State Court of South Jakarta between January and July, while the rest were decided as verstek (without the attendance of the offender).
"These violation cases include cleanliness, population, liquor, and public order violations by street vendors," said Bambang Budiwibowo as quoted by beritajakarta.com.
Bambang added that additional fines have been proven to decrease the rate of similar violations in the future.
"If the trial were held twice, there could be an additional fine of Rp 250,000 (US$18.56). This has proven to be quite effective; the Mampang area is cleaner now after we fined some offenders for littering," said Bambang.
He explained that the agency had put warning signs up prior to fining people, and still caught them red-handed.
"For cases like littering, our plainclothes officers usually stand by in places where warning signs are available and catch the offenders in the act," said Bambang. (kes)(+++)
