iau prosecutors have demanded the Pekanbaru District Court sentence a Malaysian national identified as Ng Huk Kwan, alias Jimmy, 35, to death, for allegedly trafficking 46.5 kilograms of crystal methamphetamine into Indonesia.
In a hearing on Tuesday, prosecutor Zainal Abidin from the Riau Prosecutor's Office said Jimmy had violated Article 113 paragraph 2 and Article 132 paragraph 1 of the 2009 Narcotics Law.
'The aggravating factor [for the defendant] is that the defendant has acted against the government's ongoing efforts to eradicate illegal drugs. His act could also damage the younger generation,' he said.
In their indictment, prosecutors said the defendant had received RM 5,000 ringgit (US$1,300) from a person in Malaysia, identified only as ABE, to bring the crystal meth to another person in Palembang, South Sumatra.
In April, Riau Police arrested Jimmy in a hotel room in Pekanbaru and seized two travel bags containing the illegal drugs from him.
Jimmy appeared shocked by the prosecutors' demands. 'We will submit our defense plea next week,' Jimmy's lawyer Syahril said.
