n indigenous palace called Istana Adat is set to be built in Wamena, Papua, according to special presidential staff member Lenis Kogoya on Thursday.
According to Lenis, the plan is based on suggestions from the members of the masyarakat adat (indigenous people) and will serve as a place for them to discuss important matters together.
"The idea came up once the campaign period started," said Lenis as quoted by tempo.co, adding that the place would not be a presidential palace and that it serves as proof that the government really does listen to the people's voice and appreciates Papuan traditions.
"After the Istana Adat is built in Wamena, we will then build the presidential palace in Jayapura. But the main priority is the former," said Lenis.
He later revealed that the design of the Rumah Adat will be similar to Papua's indigenous house and that the leaders of masyarakat adat will be staying there.
"The construction will start this year handled by the state-owned enterprises [BUMN]. But details on who build it and how much it costs, I do not know yet," added Lenis.
Previously, Chief of the Presidential Office Luhut Binsar Panjaitan mentioned the government's plans to build a presidential palace in Jayapura. (kes)(+++)
