ice President Jusuf Kalla said on Thursday that the slowdown of Indonesia'€™s economic growth in the second quarter of 2015 was triggered by external factors.

'€œThe global economy is weakening. Through various efforts, we luckily managed to achieve the growth level we did because many countries could not reach that level,'€ he said as quoted by Antara at the vice presidential office in Jakarta on Thursday.

Kalla said the Indonesian government was optimistic that it could achieve this year'€™s economic growth target of 5 percent in the next quarter.

He said Indonesia needed to increase its productivity, investment and expenditure on development, which would hopefully have a positive impact on the country'€™s overall economic development.

'€œGovernment projects need to be accelerated and implemented more effectively. There should also be faster investments, followed up with a more effective use of local industry to fulfill the government'€™s needs of goods and services. We should push our exports to non-traditional markets,'€ said Kalla.

The Vice President urged economic ministries to maximize their works through better planning and coordination among themselves.

'€œAs this is the result of external factors, whoever the minister is, the situation will be the same. Still, there should be working on improving,'€ he said.

On Wednesday, the Central Statistics Agency (BPS) announced that Indonesia'€™s economy grew by 4.67 percent in the second quarter of 2015, a slowdown from 4.72 percent in the previous quarter. The country'€™s economic growth stood for the first half of the year was 4.7 percent. (ebf)
