The Jakarta city administration has dropped a plan to legalize ojek (motorcycle taxis) as public transportation in Jakarta.
The plan was discussed in a meeting on Friday involving the city's transportation agency, Jakarta Traffic Police and Jakarta transportation council.
Also present at the meeting were representatives from Go-Jek and Grab Bike, smartphone application services through which customers can order ojek in the capital.
'Even though it is needed, it is clear that according to the 2009 law ojek do not meet the standards for public transportation,' the head of the city's transportation agency, Andri Yansyah, said as quoted by kompas.com.
If anyone wanted to make ojek legal, Andri suggested that they first ask for that law to be revised.
'By all means, if you want to ask the House of Representative for a revision, do so, just mention your reasons,' he said, most likely referring to the president director of Go-Jek, Nadiem Makarim, and Grab Bike marketing manager Kiki Rizki, who attended the meeting. (ika)(+++)
