he Jakarta Police stated on Saturday that they had properly investigated the sexual abuse case at the Jakarta International School, now called the Jakarta Intercultural School.
On Friday, the Jakarta High Court overturned convictions against Canadian teacher Neil Bantleman and Indonesian teaching assistant Ferdinand Tjiong, both of whom were serving 10 years in prison on charges of sexually abusing three young children at the prestigious international school. In April, the South Jakarta District Court convicted Bantleman and Tjiong of violating Indonesia's child protection laws. They maintained their innocence and appealed to the Jakarta High Court.
'Our job [as the police] is done. We properly investigated the case, proven by the fact that it went to court,' Jakarta Police spokesperson Sr. Comr. Muhammad Iqbal told a press conference on Saturday as quoted by tribunnews.com.
'The prosecutor has also stated that the case files were complete, and that the court passed a verdict, which was later appealed,' said Iqbal.
He said the Jakarta Police respected the decision of the Jakarta High Court, but added that it was not yet an inkracht (a final and binding court ruling). (kes)(+++)
