ive Italians and one Belgian were reported to have gone missing in Sangalaki Island waters in Berau regency, East Kalimantan, at 7:10 p.m. local time on Saturday.

'€œThey were reported to have been missing since Saturday evening and a search operation to locate them off Sangalaki is currently under way,'€ said East Kalimantan Disaster Mitigation Agency (BPBD) head Wahyu Widhi Heranata as quoted by Antara in Samarinda, East Kalimantan, on Sunday.

He said information of the missing foreigners had been received by the Derawan Island Police post head, who said that seven people had gone missing while diving in Sangalaki Island waters.

'€œThe seven people reported missing comprised six foreigners and one local resident, identified only as Oslan, who acted as their guide,'€ said Wahyu.

The local guide, who a resident of Derawan Island, was found alive, he said.

'€œHe was limp and is currently being treated at a community health center on Derawan Island. He is not yet able to give any information about the incident,'€ said Wahyu.

According to BPBD data, the foreigners reported missing comprise two Italian women, namely Michela, 33, and Valeria, 34; and three Italian males, namely Alberto, 36, Daniele, 36, and Vana Chris, 29. Meanwhile, the identity of the Belgian is not yet known.

'€œBased on information, they departed for Sangalaki Island waters from Derawan Island to dive. The speedboat driver who transported them from Derawan said the divers did not return to the boat on Saturday afternoon and he reported the incident to other boatmen,'€ said Wahyu. After searching the waters in the area, they found Oslan while the six foreigners remain missing. (ebf) (++++)
